Election-Day Press Summary
The Yangon municipal election process is proceeding smoothly. However, PACE is concerned about the low turnout and encourages all eligible citizens to vote.
Yangon, March 31
Overall, PACE observers found that the process for the Yangon municipal elections so far has been smooth and there have been no significant problems. However, PACE estimates that voter turnout was lower than 10% by 10:30 am. PACE observers also found that the location of some polling stations was different than the one included in the polling station list provided by the Yangon Municipal Election Commission (YMEC).
From reports received thus far, all PACE observers have been able to monitor the process. PACE received isolated reports of observers not being able to enter the polling stations initially, and some observers were unable to find their assigned sample polling stations at the location initially provided by the Yangon Municipal Election Commission. These incidents have been resolved in coordination with election officials at the township and polling station level.
